1. Key Properties

AISI/SAE 1045 is a medium-carbon steel that offers a good balance of strength, hardness, and toughness. It has good machinability, weldability, and formability with high wear resistance after heat treatment. The steel is commonly used for applications requiring moderate to high strength, while maintaining the ability to undergo machining and welding processes. 1045 steel can be further heat treated to achieve specific properties for demanding applications.

2. Applications/Industries

  • Automotive: Components such as crankshafts, gears, and axles that require higher strength and durability than lower-carbon steels.
  • Heavy Machinery: Parts like shafts, spindles, and structural components exposed to moderate mechanical stress.
  • Tool Manufacturing: Production of dies, tooling, and other components that require medium hardness and toughness.
  • Construction: Structural components, beams, and machine parts that need to withstand moderate loads.
  • Industrial Equipment: Shafts, couplings, and other mechanical components used in power transmission and machinery.

3. Certifications/Standards

  • ISO 9001 Certified: Ensures high manufacturing standards and quality.
  • Meets AISI/SAE 1045 Specifications: Complies with American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifications for medium-carbon steels.

4. Chemical Composition

  • Carbon (C): 0.43–0.50%
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.60–0.90%
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.040%
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.050%
  • Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.35%

5. Technical Specifications

  • Yield Strength: Approx. 440–600 MPa (depending on heat treatment)
  • Tensile Strength: Approx. 600–800 MPa
  • Hardness: 170–230 HB (Brinell Hardness)
